Heart disease is particularly common among South Asians. However, by making simple changes to your eating and lifestyle habits, you can help reduce your risks.

This collection of heart-friendly recipes and simple dietary advice was written by Azmina Govindji, RD and Manju Malhi, and published by the British Heart Foundation. It contains over 60 delicious and easy-to-prepare heart-healthy South Asian and fusion recipes. It is also a step-by-step guide on how to look after your heart while enjoying traditional foods.

Azmina Govindji, RD is a consultant nutritionist and registered dietitian. She was the Aga Khan Health Board (AKHB) project co-coordinator for the publication of The Asian Food Survey (2000) and the AKHB and Department of Health Enjoying Healthy Living video (2001). She is currently a media spokesperson for the British Dietetic Association, a member of the British Heart Foundation Ethnic Strategy Advisory Committee, and a consultant to the UK government Food Standards Agency, national charities and the food industry. In 2002, Azmina received the Ismaili community Award for Excellence for Outstanding Professional Achievement, as judged by Sir Kenneth Calman, then Chief Medical Officer to the UK government.

Manju Malhi has written two cookery books: the award-winning Brit Spice, and India with Passion. Some of the recipes from those books are included in Healthy Meals Healthy Heart. As well as writing on Indian food for newspapers and magazines, Manju has also appeared on several TV programmes.

Seroj Shah is a health visitor consultant. She wrote A Taste of Low Fat Asian Foods, the first Asian recipe book published by the British Heart Foundation. Seroj has carried out research on the prevention of coronary heart disease among South Asians living in an inner city area of London and originating from the Indian sub-continent. She is a member of the Health Board of the Confederation of Indian Organisations and received a Prince of Wales Award for supporting healthy living.
