The landmark Ismaili Centre, Lisbon was inaugurated on 11 July 1998 by Portugal’s President Jorge Sampaio in the presence of Mawlana Hazar Imam. Following the establishment of similar centres in London and Vancouver, it was the first of its kind in continental Europe.
Indian architect Raj Rewal and Frederico Valsassina of Lisbon incorporated a blend of tradition and the innovative use of contemporary technology into the design of the Centre, which draws from Christian and Islamic architectural influences. The 18 000 square metre complex of buildings and courtyards is set amidst a landscaped park on the edge of central Lisbon.
