Introduction

The Shia Ismaili Muslims are a community of ethnically and culturally diverse peoples living in over 25 countries around the world, united in their allegiance to His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan (known to the Ismailis as Mawlana Hazar Imam) as the 49th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader), and direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family).

Delhi, 29 October 2011 — Mawlana Hazar Imam arrived in India today to review progress on the restoration of Humayun's Tomb and the work at Sunder Nursery in the capital region of Delhi. The projects are part of a larger initiative that also aims to preserve and rehabilitate landmark buildings in Nizamuddin Basti, while improving the quality of life for inhabitants of the area.

Los Angeles, 28 October 2011 — Describing him as “an unparalleled leader in development, cultural preservation and philanthropy,” the Urban Land Institute has named Mawlana Hazar Imam the 2011 Laureate of the J.C. Nichols Prize for Visionaries in Urban Development. The prize recognises an individual whose career demonstrates a commitment to the highest standards of responsible development.

Twelve months after Mawlana Hazar Imam presided over the Foundation Ceremony of the Ismaili Centre, Toronto, the Aga Khan Museum and their Park, the buildings along Wynford Drive are taking shape. Urban renewal through cultural revitalisation transforms Mughal monument into a locus of opportunity for residents

To Khorog with love — Sharing the joy of skating half-way around the world

Since its inauguration in 2009, Khorog City Park in Tajikistan has become a popular year-round destination. Even in the deep freeze of the winter, children zipped through the park last year, laughing and throwing snowballs. But this winter, Khorog’s frozen pond will also come alive, as the joy of ice skating is shared between young Ismailis in Tajikistan and Canada, half a world away.

National Park of Mali follows four decades of AKDN investment in West Africa

The Aga Khan Development Network’s involvement in West Africa began some 40 years ago, and has included investments in people, culture and enterprise. Last month, Mawlana Hazar Imam joined the President and people of Mali in marking the 50th anniversary of their independence, and inaugurated a National Park developed by AKTC as part of the occasion. Bamako, 22 September 2010 — President Amadou Toumani Touré and Mawlana Hazar Imam inaugurated the new National Park of Mali in Bamako today. The 103-hectare Park was created under a public-private partnership between the Government of Mali and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture. Hazar Imam is in Mali along with heads of state from across Africa for the commemoration of the 50th Anniversary of Malian Independence.

Bamako, 20 September 2010 — Mawlana Hazar Imam, accompanied by Prince Hussain and Princess Khaliya, was received by President Amadou Toumani Touré of Mali today, upon his arrival in Bamako. They join heads of state from across West Africa for events commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the country’s Independence on 22 September.

Amongst these events will be the official opening of the National Park of Mali, which was developed under a public-private partnership between the Government of Mali and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.

Toronto, 28 May 2010 — Mawlana Hazar Imam and Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper were in Toronto today to mark the Foundation of the Ismaili Centre, the Aga Khan Museum and their Park situated in the city’s Don Mills area. The Prime Minister used the occasion to formally announce the Canadian Parliament’s unanimous decision to make Mawlana Hazar Imam an Honorary Canadian Citizen.

Over the decades, the Toronto neighbourhood of Don Mills has opened its welcoming arms and helped many new immigrants make Canada their home, including Ismailis and other Muslims. On 28 May, Mawlana Hazar Imam will lay the foundation for three important new projects that will invite Canadians — Muslim and non-Muslim — to explore their connected heritage and celebrate their unique backgrounds.

Reflecting the diversity and pluralism that characterises the Muslim world, the artwork and objects that comprise the Collection are helping to foster a greater appreciation of our collective human heritage and shared history.

In the Autumn of 2009, the UAE Architecture Heritage Society hosted the ATHAR public lectures series in conjunction with the Ismaili Centre, Dubai. ATHAR is a programme of the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property, which advocates the conservation of cultural heritage.

A newly revitalised Khorog City Park was inaugurated on 10 October 2009 by First Deputy Prime Minister Asadullo Gulomov of the Republic of Tajikistan, in the presence of Mawlana Hazar Imam. The Park is a significant new green space that will serve the residents of the capital of the Gorno-Badakhshan autonomous region in Tajikistan.
