Introduction

The Shia Ismaili Muslims are a community of ethnically and culturally diverse peoples living in over 25 countries around the world, united in their allegiance to His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan (known to the Ismailis as Mawlana Hazar Imam) as the 49th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader), and direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family).

Kenyan Jamat gathers to witness opening of Heart and Cancer Centre by Mawlana Hazar Imam and President Kibaki

Nairobi, 25 July 2011 — Thousands of Ismailis gathered at the Parklands Complex in Nairobi to witness the opening of a new Heart and Cancer Centre. The Aga Khan University Hospital facility was inaugurated by His Excellency President Mwai Kibaki of Kenya in the presence of Mawlana Hazar Imam.

Jamat in Tanzania organises blood drive and donates necessities to victims of disaster

When the Government of Tanzania requested support for the victims of an explosion on the outskirts of Dar es Salaam, the Ismailis in the area were eager to help. The Ismaili Council for Tanzania partnered with the Aga Khan Hospital to organise a blood drive, and members of the Jamat donated emergency supplies to victims of the disaster.

Fatal landslide in Hunza Valley threatens to flood villages

A massive landslide in the Hunza Valley damaged and buried three villages in the northern Pakistan territory of Gilgit-Baltistan, killing at least 19 people and rendering over 250 families homeless. Residents were quickly evacuated, but the aftermath of the landslide is also threatening populations outside of the immediately affected area.

Mombasa group offers support to families of children with medical needs

When Tanuja Walli’s son was diagnosed and treated for a heart defect, she realised how many other families in Mombasa did not have the resources to provide their children with the health care that they required. She and a circle of concerned friends devised a plan to support families in crisis, both emotionally and financially.
