Introduction

The Shia Ismaili Muslims are a community of ethnically and culturally diverse peoples living in over 25 countries around the world, united in their allegiance to His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan (known to the Ismailis as Mawlana Hazar Imam) as the 49th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader), and direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family).

AKPBS’s innovative Building and Construction Improvement Programme has received the Award for Avoided Deforestation at this year’s Ashden Awards for Sustainable Energy. Princess Zahra, Head of the Social Welfare department of the Aga Khan Development Network, accepted the award on behalf of AKPBS at a ceremony in London.

Rebuilding in post-tsunami Aceh

Naik Alam has been working in the tsunami-affected region of Aceh, Indonesia since 2005, as part of an effort to rebuild the devastated province. He has applied his knowledge of sanitation to improve access to fresh water in some of the worst-affected communities in the region.
