Introduction

The Shia Ismaili Muslims are a community of ethnically and culturally diverse peoples living in over 25 countries around the world, united in their allegiance to His Highness Prince Karim Aga Khan (known to the Ismailis as Mawlana Hazar Imam) as the 49th hereditary Imam (spiritual leader), and direct descendant of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him and his family).

Mawlana Hazar Imam in Qatar for the Aga Khan Award for Architecture

Doha, Qatar, 22 November 2010 —Mawlana Hazar Imam, accompanied by Prince Hussain, arrived in Doha today, where the Award Ceremony for the 11th cycle of the Aga Khan Award for Architecture will take place later this week. Hazar Imam and Prince Hussain were received by Dr Hamad bin Abdulaziz Al Kuwari, Qatar’s Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage, and Naushad Rashid, President of the Ismaili Council for the United Arab Emirates.

Prince Hussain attends AKDN-sponsored Governors’ Global Climate Summit in California

Last week, Prince Hussain attended the Governors’ Global Climate Summit 3 in the United States on behalf of the Aga Khan Development Network, at Mawlana Hazar Imam’s request. Co-hosted by California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger and the Governors of Washington, Oregon, Wisconsin and Michigan, the conference counted the AKDN among its major sponsors for the third consecutive year.

Mawlana Hazar Imam arrives in Mali to mark 50th anniversary of country's independence and the opening of its National Park

Bamako, 20 September 2010 — Mawlana Hazar Imam, accompanied by Prince Hussain and Princess Khaliya, was received by President Amadou Toumani Touré of Mali today, upon his arrival in Bamako. They join heads of state from across West Africa for events commemorating the 50th Anniversary of the country’s Independence on 22 September.

Amongst these events will be the official opening of the National Park of Mali, which was developed under a public-private partnership between the Government of Mali and the Aga Khan Trust for Culture.

Canada visit

During his Canadian visit, Mawlana Hazar Imam met with the Governor-General of Canada, as well as senior government and Jamati leaders, and granted four Golden Jubilee Darbars across the country. Hazar Imam was joined by the Prime Minister for the opening of the Delegation of the Ismaili Imamat in Ottawa.

France visit diary

Mawlana Hazar Imam granted the final Darbar of his Golden Jubilee in Paris, and was joined by Prince Amyn, Princess Zahra, Prince Rahim, Prince Hussain and Princess Khaliya. Hazar Imam also met with senior government and Jamati leaders in France, and signed an agreement between the AKDN and the French Republic.

The inaugural Golden Jubilee Games came to a close on 29 June 2008, following seven days of international brotherhood, intense athleticism, and a celebration of Mawlana Hazar Imam’s Jubilee through sport. The Closing Ceremony was attended by Prince Hussain and Princess Khaliya.

Prince Hussain and Princess Khaliya attended the Golden Jubilee Games today, joining an audience of several thousand gathered at Moi International Sports Centre. In the afternoon they met the medal winners and posed for a photograph with them.

West Africa visit diary

Mawlana Hazar Imam travelled to Mali, Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, and Senegal during his Golden Jubilee tour of West Africa. During the tour, Hazar Imam was warmly welcomed by government leaders from all countries as he attended to various AKDN programmes and initiatives in the region.

Prince Amyn, Prince Hussain and Princess Khaliya today toured the Ismaili Centre in Lisbon. They are in Portugal for the opening of “The Path of Princes: Masterpieces of the Aga Khan Museum Collection” exhibition at the Calouste Gulbenkian Museum in Lisbon.

Prince Hussain Aga Khan and his wife, Princess Khaliya, attended the formal inauguration of the Aga Khan Historic Cities Programme’s (HCP) travelling exhibition at the City Hall, in Sugar Land, Texas. Running concurrently with the HCP exhibition in the USA is another international Golden Jubilee programme taking place in Canada, A Mystical Journey, which premiered in Vancouver and will travel to five Canadian cities before touring other countries. The performance of A Mystical Journey (AMJ) held in Edmonton, Alberta on 17 October 2007 was the next venue for Prince Hussain and Princess Khaliya.
